World Hearing Day is March 3, 2020 and our clinic is joining in on this celebration! This day is specifically set aside to raise awareness on deafness and how to prevent hearing loss, and to promote healthy hearing and hearing care across the world.
In honor of this celebration, we want to talk about the importance of maintaining healthy hearing and how it affects your social and physical well-being.
Maintaining Healthy Hearing: The Social and Physical Benefits
While Statistics Canada reports that 21% of adults have mild hearing loss with 7% of adults experience “moderate or worse” hearing loss, we know that hearing loss can be avoided through preventative actions like protecting your ears from loud sounds, practicing healthy ear care and keeping up with immunizations.
Keeping your hearing healthy can help maintain your overall health from your social well-being, to your physical and even cognitive health. Being able to hear clearly even encourages greater social interaction with those wearing hearing aids more likely to engage in activities than those who do not but suffer from hearing loss.
And did you know that healthy hearing is actually linked to a healthy heart and brain? Studies have proven that good circulation is important to maintaining healthy hearing. Conversely, inadequate blood flow or trauma to the blood vessels of the inner ear can cause hearing loss.
Hearing is also an important brain activity and when the brain begins to be deprived of sound because of hearing loss, it actually loses the ability to process sound. Parts of the brain start to shrink or atrophy over time, even in those who suffer from only mild hearing loss.
Each year the World Health Organization (WHO) decides on a theme for World Hearing day and produces advocacy materials such as brochures, pamphlets, banners, infographics and presentations. This year the theme is
“Hearing care for all” focusing on addressing hearing loss and ear diseases worldwide.
The theme highlights the importance of taking measures for good hearing care such as:
This year in honor of World Hearing Day, we want to encourage everyone to make your hearing health a priority. We want to encourage making hearing health checks a part of your regular health exams.
