Friends discussing hearing loss

Living with tinnitus — the persistent ringing, buzzing, or whooshing in your ears — can be exhausting. According to Statistics Canada, an estimated 9.2 million Canadian adults have experienced tinnitus, with millions reporting it significantly affects their sleep, concentration, and quality of life.

Until recently, options were limited. Now, Lenire® — a clinically proven, Health Canada-approved device developed by Irish medical technology company Neuromod Devices — is available at select Canadian hearing clinics, including Professional Audiology Clinic in Edmonton and Sherwood Park.

What Is Lenire® and How Does It Work?

Lenire uses a technology called bimodal neuromodulation — a non-invasive approach that pairs sound therapy with gentle sensory stimulation to retrain how your brain processes tinnitus.

How a session works:

  • Bluetooth Headphones – Custom sound patterns are played through wireless headphones to activate the auditory nerve pathways in your brain.
  • Tonguetip Device – A small, handheld device delivers safe, painless electrical pulses to the surface of the tongue, activating the somatosensory system.
  • Controller – A lightweight handheld controller lets you manage the timing and intensity of each session.

Together, these signals stimulate the auditory, attention, and emotional centres of the brain. Over a typical treatment course of around 12 weeks (30 minutes, twice daily), the brain is progressively retrained to reduce its fixation on tinnitus sounds.

What the Research Says

Lenire is backed by three large-scale, independently peer-reviewed clinical trials involving more than 600 patients:

  • 91% of patients who used Lenire as directed reported clinically meaningful reductions in tinnitus distress — relief sustained for at least 12 months after treatment.
  • Lenire was found to be more effective than sound-only therapy for patients with moderate or worse tinnitus in a controlled clinical trial, the basis for its FDA De Novo approval in the US (March 2023).
  • A real-world study of 220 patients published in Nature Communications Medicine found 91.5% reported clinically meaningful improvements.
  • Lenire has been rated the top tinnitus treatment for safety and effectiveness by Tinnitus UK, a leading tinnitus patient charity.

Tinnitus in Canada: You’re Not Alone

Tinnitus affects an estimated 43% of Canadians aged 16–79 at some point in their lifetime, and approximately 7% report it significantly disrupts their daily life, including sleep and mood. Despite being so common, many Canadians are told by their doctor there’s nothing to be done — a message that is no longer true.

With Lenire now Health Canada-approved and available in Alberta, Professional Audiology Clinic is proud to offer Edmonton and Sherwood Park patients access to one of the most evidence-based tinnitus interventions available today.
